FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Erick Garcia was so close to another title. Garcia placed second, just two tenths of a second behind UCLA's Henry Hagenbuch at the Triton Classic in San Diego. Gracia and the Bulldogs were third as a team during the 10K race that was held on the campus of UC San Diego.
Junior Roxanne Sellick led the women's team, finishishing fifth overall as the Bulldogs placed third in the 6K race.
"Everyone ran great today," said head coach Joe Gonzales. "Roxanne and Marissa just pushed each other and Jennifer Hernandez ran very well despite coming off an injury. She hadn't run for seven days, so I was proud of her effort."
Sellick clocked in at 22:38 and was followed by sophomore Marissa McPhail, who finished sixth overall with a time of 22:39.
Senior Meredith Hawkins got into the top-20, finishing 19th with a time of 23:34. junior Briana Cleary was the fourth member of the team to finish, coming in at 24:20 (37th). Sophomore Jennifer Hernandez was 39th with a time of 24:25.
On the men's side, Garcia was the top-finisher for the fourth consecutive competition. Garcia clocked in with a time of 32:43.3 in the team's first 10K race of the season.
Sophomore Frank Sanders was 14th with a time of 34:06 and sophomore Brandon Geis came in 22nd with a time of 34:35.
