Wilson Leads Fresno State in Scoring

PROVO, Utah - The Fresno State women's basketball team battled last year's Mountain West Conference champion BYU tough for a half but in the final stanza the Cougars pulled away to a 78-59 win on Saturday afternoon at the Marriott Center.
"This is our first road game and BYU is a good team," Fresno State coach Adrian Wiggins said. "We didn't play real well. BYU deserves the credit."
Fresno State (0-2) was led by Tierre Wilson's 14 points, six rebounds and two steals. Marnique Arnold added 11 points for the Bulldogs. Erica Henry grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. For the game Fresno State shot 30 percent from the field and forced BYU (2-1) into 19 turnovers. Jennifer Leaks came off the bench and had four steals in only nine minutes of play.
After falling behind 11-4 early, Fresno State rallied with a 16-5 run to take a 20-16 lead following a LaToya Brown jumper with 11:17 left in the first half. Wilson sparked the run with seven points and Emma Andrews added five during the Bulldog spurt. BYU retook the lead at 21-20 and never trailed the rest of the game.
Fresno State did tie the game at 33 thanks a Bailey Amundsen 3-pointer with 2:17 until halftime. The Bulldogs stayed within 10 points in the first six minutes of the second half but BYU went on a 12-0 run to take a 59-40 lead with 10 minutes to play. The closest Fresno State got the rest of the way was 16 points at 62-46.
BYU was led by Mallary Carling's 17 points and Shawnee Slade's 16. The Cougars shot 47 percent from the floor.
The Bulldogs return to the floor next Saturday for an 11 a.m. tip off at the Save Mart Center against Big 12 foe Oklahoma State. The game can be heard live on 790 ESPN Radio, the Deuce.
