FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's basketball team showcased its run and gun style of play by beating the Melbourne Roos 107-63 in its first of two exhibition games on Sunday. The Dogs' had six players in double figures, led by Bailey Amundsen's 18 points.
"This was a great game for us to play," Fresno State coach Adrian Wiggins said. "I really felt like we needed some game experience in trying to figure out some of the things we are trying to do against somebody besides ourselves. It was nice to play a different opponent and it was nice to see some zone."
Jaleesa Ross had 16 points, Hayley Munro and Tierre Wilson each had 13 while Marnique Arnold had 11 points and LaShaunte Stephens had 10.
The Bulldogs shot 43 percent from the floor and hit 13 3-pointers while dishing out 28 assists and grabbing 62 rebounds. Wilson, Emma Andrews and Ross each had five assists. Taja Edwards grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
"I felt like we really shared the ball well today," Wiggins said. "To have 28 assists on 40 field goals is pretty neat. Overall it was a very good night as far as sharing the basketball and getting better. We want to play fast, shoot fast and take good shots. I thought we had a lot of good shots tonight at a fast pace. It really worked for us."
Fresno State led 7-5 two minutes into the game and then went on a 15-0 run to take a 22-5 lead following a Stephens layup with 12:49 left in the first half. The Bulldogs led 55-26 at halftime and led by as many as 35 points in the half.
Amundsen scored 14 of her 18 points in the first half while Ross added 10. Munro also added seven points and five rebounds in the period.
"I had a bit of butterflies coming into my first college game," Munro said. It was fun that we played an Australian team so I could see some of my friends. As a team we played really well. It was a fast paced game. I was a bit tired but we got our subs in and out. It worked out.
Fresno State led by as many as 44 points in the second half.
Former Bulldog star Chantella Perera had 14 points and seven rebounds for the Roos.
Fresno State concludes its exhibition play on Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Fresno Pacific. The Bulldogs then open regular season play on Saturday at 1 p.m. against No. 14 Cal.
