FRESNO, Calif. - On senior night where the Fresno State volleyball team honored three seniors, Alisha McKee led the way with 12 kills and fellow senior Tiffany Hess tied a career-high three service aces as the Bulldogs fell to Idaho 3-0 at the Save Mart Center on Thursday. The game scores were 30-21, 30-20 and 30-28.
Fresno State took an early 3-0 lead in game one, but a kill by Sarah Conwell gave the Vandals the lead for good at 6-5. McKee had six of her team-high 12 kills in game one.
The Bulldogs hit a match-high .267 in game two, led by McKee again with five kills. Down 28-14, Fresno State scored six-consecutive points behind the serving of freshman Kelly Weymouth. It was the Dogs' largest run of the match. A kill by Conwell ended game two.
The Vandals swung hard in games one and two as they hit .224 in game one and .395 in game two.
As they have done all year, Fresno State came out of the lockerroom for game three and proved they would not go down without a fight.
Down by as many as six at 19-13, Fresno State fought back to cut to within two at 26-24 and tie it as late as 28-28. A kill by Haley Larsen gave the Vandals the 29-28 lead and an attack error by the Bulldogs ended the match.
"We had a great comeback in game three and almost took the game," said Hess. "We need to be able to start strong and have that momentum the whole match. Hopefully we can do that next week at the WAC tournament.
Freshman libero Kelly Mason led the Bulldogs with a career-high 25 digs. Sophomore Lexi Watson also tied a career-high with eight kills.
Hess, McKee and Angela Wiggins were the three seniors honored before the match.
"I had a great time playing my last senior game in the Save Mart Center," said McKee. "We are young, but I know we will come together and do great things at the WAC Tournament."
The Bulldogs next travel to Las Cruces, N.M., to play No. 13 New Mexico State on Sunday at 6 p.m. PST. They will then remain at NMSU for the WAC tournament that begins on November 15.
The Bulldogs currently sit at 3-12 in the conference and in seventh place in the standings. Idaho improved to 8-7 with the victory. The seeds will be determined after the final matches on Sunday.
