TEMPE, Ariz. - Sophomore Robin Mackin's two-out single to center in the top of the seventh drove in junior Kristin Sylvester for the go-ahead run in Fresno State's 2-1 victory over Cal State Northridge, Sunday at the Kajikawa Classic. Mackin pitched a scoreless seventh to preserve the win and help the Bulldogs win their third straight.
Fresno State (3-2) trailed 1-0 heading in to the final frame. Sophomore Merryann Barr, who was Fresno State's starter in the circle, walked with one out. She was replaced by pinch runner Brooke Phipps before junior infielder Kristin Sylvester singled to left. One out later, pinch hitter Aja Scheuber singled home Phipps to tie the score.
Cal State Northridge tallied the first run of the ball game in the bottom of the second. The Matadors' Micah Putnam hit a one-out single to center then stole second. She advanced to third on a ground out and scored on Amanda Pitzenberger's single.
Fresno State threatened in the sixth when senior catcher Nichole Willis doubled down the left field line with two outs, putting runners on second and third. But junior infielder Jenna Cervantez popped out to end the inning.
Mackin got the win after relieving Barr in the fifth. Mackin (2-1) pitched two and a third scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out four. Barr got a no-decision after pitching four and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on five hits while walking one and striking out one.
The Bulldogs end the tournament on a three-game winning streak after dropping their first two. Fresno State will head to Santa Clara for a doubleheader on Feb. 13 before returning to Bulldog Diamond for the home opener on Feb. 16 against No. 20 Louisville.
