No. 22 Bulldogs Fall to Top-Ranked Tennessee, 5-0

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The No. 22 Fresno State softball team fell 5-0 to No. 1 Tennessee in its first game of the annual Palm Springs Classic. Junior infielder Kristin Sylvester singled to left with two outs in the seventh, breaking up Monica Abbott's perfect game. Fresno State fell to 6-4 on the season, while Tennessee improved to 12-0.
Tennessee scored two in the top of the fourth when Lady Vols' Erinn Webb was hit by a pitch and Nicole Kajitani walked to drive in another. The Lady Vols later scored two in the fifth on a throwing error and one more in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Senior catcher Nichole Willis threw out Tennessee's Lindsay Schutzler attempting to steal second in the third. Willis has now thrown out eight base runners this year.
Sophomore pitcher Robin Mackin was solid early on, striking out the side in the top of the first. Mackin took the loss, allowing five runs - three earned - on nine hits and two walks while striking out seven.
The Bulldogs play Ohio State tonight at 8 p.m. in their second game of the Palm Springs Classic.
