CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Sophomore right-hander Robin Mackin threw a complete game shutout and drove in the game's only run as Fresno State closed out the 2007 Palm Springs Classic with a 1-0 defeat of Penn State, Sunday in Cathedral City, Calif. Fresno State improved to 8-6, while Penn State fell to 3-5.
In the bottom of the third, sophomore Mallory Perkins reached on a fielder's choice. Perkins then stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored as Mackin singled to left.
Sophomore Haley Perkins and junior Kristin Sylvester had Fresno State's other two hits.
With one out in the fifth, Penn State loaded the bases. But Mackin stuck out Jen Acunto just before Kari Lucas was forced out at third to end the inning.
Mackin improved to 6-5 on the year, allowing no runs on three hits and a walk, while striking out six.
The Bulldogs head to Pacific on Feb.28 before traveling to Las Vegas for UNLV Invitational March 2-4.
