FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State welcomes five teams for the first "Best of the West" tournament, March 3-4, at the Fresno State Student Horse Center. On Saturday, the teams will compete in Western events of Reining and Western Horsemanship. Sunday's event will feature the English events of Over Fences and On the Flat. A tournament bracket format will be used to determine the team places.
About the Opponents
This weekend's event features the Western teams from Delaware State, TCU, South Dakota State and Tennessee-Martin. Fresno State will enter two teams, a Blue and Red squad, to complete the six team field. For Sunday's English event, SMU joins all the other teams in the competition. Fresno State has faced both TCU and SMU earlier this season, defeating both schools.
Last Home Show
This weekend's show is the final home event of the season for the Bulldog Equestrian squad. The squad will be at Oklahoma State and Kansas State, March 16 & 18, and then wrap-up the 2006-07 season at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships in Waco, Texas, April 18-20.
1430 ESPN To Broadcast on Sunday
Fresno State's radio partner, 1430 ESPN radio, will broadcast live from the Student Horse Center on Sunday from 11 a.m. to Noon. Kelly Carr and former Bulldog Sarah Woodward will be discussing the show and interviewing Bulldog coaches and student-athletes.
Mother Nature
Due to the amount of rain in the Valley this week, the Fresno State Student Horse Center has been under water for the last couple of days. The Fresno State facilities crew will attempt to pump and dry out the arena. Should the main arena not be suitable for competition, the events will be held indoors in the Pavilion, located on Barstow, just to the north of the outdoor arena. Malmo Moment
Quotes from head coach Becky Malmo, who is in her third year as Fresno State's head coach: About this week: "We have some riders how haven't had much experience this season competing, which will be good. I'm really excited about this field fo teams because I really like all of the coaches and they have impressive programs, which will make it for a much meet. It's also a new format, one we've never done here, so that will make it fun and interesting."
