No. 23 Bulldogs Rally Past Wildcats

FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Vanessa Heroux defeated Arizona's Natalia Toporowska in three sets to rally the 23rd-ranked Bulldogs past the Wildcats 4-3, Saturday in Tuscon, Ariz. Heroux played at the No. 4 spot in the singles lineup and clinched the victory for Fresno State, despite the Bulldogs losing the doubles point.
Fourth-ranked sophomore Melanie Gloria won her second straight, dominating Danielle Steinberg at the No. 1 spot. Sophomore Danon Beatty was also impressive, defeating Tina Razloznik in straight sets. Both Gloria and Beatty are 2-0 in singles so far this season. Freshman Anastasia Petukhova looked just as good with a straight set win at No. 3 singles over Kasia Jakowlew.
"It was a good win against a PAC-10 school on the road," head coach Simon Thibodeau said. "We found a way to win and I know we will learn from our mistakes. We're still a young team, but we are constantly getting better."
Gloria and freshman Renata Kucerkova remained perfect in dual matches, winning their third straight in an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles over Steinberg and Todorova.
Freshman Bruna Paes lost at No. 6 singles, but nearly pulled out the victory before losing 10-6 in the super-tiebreaker.
Fresno State improved 2-1 on the season, while Arizona fell to 1-3. The Bulldogs head to Southern California next weekend to face 14th-ranked UCLA on Feb. 9 and 13th-ranked Pepperdine on Feb. 10.
