Softball Sweeps Bulldog Classic, Takes Home Title

Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team swept through the Bulldog Classic, ending the four-day tournament with a perfect 5-0 record and winning the title. Fresno State beat Penn State in the final game of the tournament 10-2 in six innings Sunday afternoon.
Fresno State finished 5-0, while Colorado State went 4-1, BYU finished 3-2, Penn State went 2-3, Purdue was 1-4 and Toledo finished the tournament 0-5.
With the win the Bulldogs improve to 18-8 and have now seven straight games. Fresno State has also won 12 out of its last 14 games.
Offensively, Kristin Sylvester and Shannon Garvin each had big games, going 3 for 4 each. Sylvester had two doubles and drove in two runs, while Garvin had one double and drove in three runs.
Haley Perkins set the offensive tone once again at the top of the order, going 2 for 4 with one run scored. Jenna Cervantez went 1 for 3 with a solo home run and Lisamarie Coronado went 1 for 2 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Robin Mackin pitched six innings for the Bulldogs, picking up her 13th win of the year. Mackin allowed two earned runs on four hits, while striking out six batters.
After giving up one run in the top of the first inning, the Bulldogs bounced back with a big seven-run third inning.
Michelle Palazuelos reached on an error to lead off the inning, followed by a Haley Perkins single. After Nichole Willis was hit to load the bases, Merryann Barr drove home the first run with a single to center. Kristin Sylvester followed with a two-run double to right center. Lisamarie Coronado and Shannon Garvin each followed with RBI singles to cap off the scoring.
Fresno State added to its lead in the fourth inning when Jenna Cervantez hit her first home run of the season down the left field line.
Fresno State continues its nine-game homestand when it faces Purdue in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 13 beginning at 6 p.m.
