FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State men's golf team (298-292 - 590) is in fifth place out of 15 teams after two rounds at the Fresno State Lexus Classic at the Sunnyside Country Club today. San Diego State is in the lead with 12-under par with a 5 stroke lead. They are followed by UC Irvine (569) and Nevada (+11). Hawaii is two strokes ahead of Fresno State to come in fourth.
Matt Ryan is leading the Bulldogs tied for ninth finishing even on the day. He improved his first round of 73 by shooting a 1-under par in the second round. Matt Shaw followed close behind tied for 15th place shooting back-to-back rounds of 73.
"I am very proud of the solid comeback going into the second round," said head coach Mike Watney. "The guys were a little nervous in the first round but then they steadied. Both Matts played very good and they are both in contention to win the tournament."
Brad Wyatt (74-75 - 149) tied for 26th and Gunnar Avinelis (78-73 - 151) is tied for 40th to count toward the Bulldogs score. Grant Doverspike (78-77 - 155) is tied for 62nd place and Todd Angel (80-79 - 159) is tied for 77th. Mark Pryor (76-79 - 155) played as an individual and tied for 62nd.
"Brad Wyatt is a solid player for a freshman and he is going to get nothing but better," Watney said. "Gunnar had a nice comeback today after a poor start in the first round."
Individually there is a three way tie for the top spot. Aaron Goldberg from San Diego State, Jay Choe from UC Irvine and Adam Porzak from San Diego State are all 3-under on the day.
"Sunnyside is a great course but it was playing tough with firm greens," Watney said.
The third round of the Fresno State Lexus Classic will be held Tues. with an 8 a.m. tee-time off of holes 1 and 10 at the Sunnyside Country Club. The tournament is open to the public. Go to golfstat.com for live scoring or gobulldogs.com for all the results.
