Bulldogs Take Fifth at the Fresno State Lexus Classic

Fresno State men's golf (298-292-288 - 878) team finished fifth out of 15 teams Tuesday at the Fresno State Lexus Classic at the Sunnyside Country Club. San Diego State (849/-15) won the team title by one stroke over UC Irvine (850/-14). Nevada (870) finished third and Hawaii (878) took fourth.
Four out of six players for Fresno State shot a 72 to score a third round total of 288. Leading for the `Dogs was Matt Ryan (73-71-72 - 216) who took 11th place finishing at even par.
"It feels good to lead the team" Ryan said. "But it is easy to put others ahead of me at anytime, like Gunnar and Matt they are good leaders and it is easy to play with guys like that."
Matt Shaw (73-73-74 - 220) tied for 23rd after shooting a third round of 74. Brad Wyatt (221/+5) tied for 29th after capping a third round of 72. Grant Doverspike had a third ro\und of 72 to help the `Dogs but finished near the end due to a second round disqualification. Todd Angel (80-79-72) and Gunnar Avinelis (78-73-80) tied for 62nd with a total score of 231.
"I'm proud of our team, we made a nice comeback today," Ryan said. "It's more comfortable playing at home, it was a good tournament and we had a lot of hometown support. And a lot of thanks to all of the volunteers that came out."
Individually Brian Edick (74-68-67 - 209) of UC Irvine took home the individual title finishing 7-under after a third round of 67. Teammate Jay Choe (211) took second finishing two strokes behind.
"These guys are young, but they are getting better everyday," Watney said. "I am proud of them."
The Bulldogs will play at the Western Collegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club March 19-20 in Santa Cruz, Calif.
