FULLERTON, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team fell 3-1 to 17th-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette Thursday afternoon in its first game of the Judi Garman Classic. Junior Kristin Sylvester's one-out homer in the second gave the `Dogs an early lead. But it was not enough as Louisiana-Lafayette scored three in the bottom of the second. Fresno State fell to 20-9 on the season, while Louisiana-Lafayette improved to 25-6.
It was Sylvester's first home run of the year. Sophomores Robin Mackin and Haley Perkins also had hits for the Bulldogs.
Lafayette's Brittany Cuevas got the win, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out eight.
Sophomore Merryann Barr took the loss despite allowing only one earned run. Mackin relieved Barr with the score tied and two outs in the second, but a Bulldog throwing error allowed the Cajuns to score two more for the go-ahead runs. Mackin allowed one hit and one walk over four and a third innings of work, striking out seven in the process.
The Bulldogs face No. 2 Arizona State on Friday at 9 a.m. in Fresno State's second game of pool play. At 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, the `Dogs face Notre Dame before bracket play begins on Saturday.
