FRESNO, Calif. - Sophomore Melanie Gloria clinched No. 14 Fresno State's 4-3 victory over Texas Christian with a 6-2, 6-4 defeat of Anna Sydorska, Thursday evening at the Wathen Tennis Center. The Bulldogs won their sixth straight match, improving to 8-2 on the season. TCU, which only traveled five players because of injuries to the rest of the team, fell to 7-6 on the year.
"It was a good win over a good TCU team," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "Even though they didn't have a complete squad, they had five very good players today. We played very clean in doubles and although we weren't as efficient in singles, it was still a good win."
The evening started with a solid showing in doubles. TCU forfeited at the No. 3 spot and the `Dogs won at both No. 1 and No. 2. Gloria and sophomore Tinesta Rowe beat seventh-ranked Cetnik and Sydorska 8-4. Freshmen Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova currently hold a No. 54 ranking in doubles and they beat Munch-Soegaard and Nichols 8-3 at the No. 2 spot.
Kucerkova improved to 18-6 overall and 8-2 in dual by beating No. 37 Ana Cetnik in straight sets. She has won six straight matches, winning her last five without dropping a set.
Gloria has also won six consecutive at the No. 1 spot, accomplishing the feat without dropping a set. Gloria, the nation's third-ranked singles player, improved to 22-4 overall and 8-1 in dual matches.
The Bulldogs now turn their attention to South Florida, which beat TCU on Wednesday night. South Florida boasts a strong lineup in both singles and doubles, and the `Dogs will look to improve on their winning streak. The two teams will begin tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the Wathen Tennis Center.
