Fresno State Finishes in Third at Western Intercollegiate

The Fresno State men's golf team (283-283-300 - 866) finished third place out of 18 teams at the Western Intercollegiate at the par-70 Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, Calif. This is the Bulldogs best finish of the year.
Purdue (849) had a solid round and increased their lead by15 strokes to California (864). Washington (867) remained in fourth place one stroke behind Fresno State. Long Beach State (868) slipped from second after a third round score of 304 to tie with San Diego (868) for fifth.
Matt Ryan (71-70-72 - 213) and Grant Doverspike (69-68-76 - 213) both finished 3-over to tie for tenth place leading for Fresno State. Matt Shaw (71-72-75 - 218) tied for 26th and Brad Wyatt (72-72-77 - 222) tied for 48th place. Todd Angel (75-76-83 - 234) tied for 82nd. Gunnar Avinelis (70-80-80 - 230) played as an individual for Fresno State tying fro 74th.
"Scores are a little higher today, it was raining and kind of cold which made it difficult," said head coach Mike Watney. "We didn't really have a good day, we lost ground to Purdue. We still have a lot of work to do, but we beat all the WAC teams and region teams, which is a positive. I am proud of our top ten guys for sure."
Individually John Streibich from Xavier won the title with a score of 199 and Purdue's Pariya Junhasavasdikul (200) was one stroke behind to take second.
Fresno State returns to action April 13-15 at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
