FRESNO, Calif. - The 13th-ranked Fresno State women's tennis team won its ninth straight match on Thursday evening, defeating Kansas State 7-0 at the Wathen Tennis Center. Third-ranked sophomore Melanie Gloria clinched a Bulldog victory for the third consecutive match, easily beating Viviana Yrureta in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. Fresno State improved to 11-2 on the season, while Kansas State fell to 2-9.
"The team spirit is really high right now," head coach Simon Thibodeau said. "We came out very strong in singles."
There was no letdown for Fresno State after it returned late Wednesday night from Los Angeles where the team beat No. 8 USC, 4-3.
Fresno State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. Gloria and Tinesta Rowe won their fifth straight at the No. 1 spot, beating Klimova and Kudlackova, 8-2. Freshmen Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova beat Da Valle and Yrureta, 8-6, to clinch the point. The only blemish was a tough 9-7 loss at the No. 3 spot for sophomore Danon Beatty and freshman Vanessa Heroux.
Beatty was nearly flawless, however, at the No. 4 spot in the singles lineup. The sophomore lost only one game, defeating Katerina Kudlackova 6-1, 6-0. Heroux also performed well at the No. 5 spot, beating Olga Klimova 6-3, 6-4.
Kucerkova won in straight sets, beating Fernanda Da Valle 6-0, 6-2. Kucerkova improved to 21-7 overall and 9-3 in dual matches.
Petukhova was solid at the No. 3 spot, defeating Tamar Kvaratskhelia 6-2, 6-0. She improved to 9-3 in dual matches and has won three straight.
Junior Jacqueline Haskett finished off the match by beating Natasha Vieira 6-3, 6-7 (3), (10-6).
"Jacqui is starting to find her game and I thought she played very tough," Thibodeau said.
Fresno State now turns its focus to No. 20 Colorado on March 26 at 1:30 p.m. in the Wathen Tennis Center.
