LAS VEGAS - The Fresno State softball team split two games Saturday during the second day of the UNLV Invitational at Eller Media Stadium. The Bulldogs beat No. 23 Nebraska 3-2 in the first game before falling to Southern Utah 1-0 in the second game.
In the first game, sophomore Haley Perkins doubled to deep right field with two outs in the fourth, driving home the tying and go-ahead runs in Fresno State's 3-2 defeat of 23rd-ranked Nebraska. Sophomore pitcher Robin Mackin threw her second complete game in as many days helping the Bulldogs win their fifth straight.
Nebraska took an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning. Nebraska's Devin Porter hit a solo homer with two outs, and Crystal Carlwile later scored on a Bulldog throwing error.
Junior Jenna Cervantez singled to left center with one out in the fourth followed by senior Shannon Garvin's walk. Junior Michelle Palazuelos singled to drive in Cervantez, but Garvin was thrown out at third during the play. Nebraska then intentionally walked Mackin before Perkins' clinching hit.
It was the second straight day in which Fresno State has come from behind to beat a ranked opponent. On Friday, the `Dogs trailed No. 18 Cal 1-0 before rallying to beat the Golden Bears 2-1.
In the second game, Southern Utah's Caroline Fernandez singled home Bobbie Jo Merrill with one out in the bottom of the seventh to give the Thunderbirds a 1-0 win.
Sophomore pitcher Merryann Barr was solid, despite the loss. She allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four.
The Bulldogs are now 11-7 as they prepare for the final game of the UNLV Invitational. Fresno State will battle DePaul at 9 a.m. on Sunday at Eller Media Stadium.
