FRESNO, Calif. - The 15th-ranked Fresno State women's tennis team did what it was supposed to do Saturday afternoon at the Wathen Tennis Center, beating UC Irvine 7-0 in a clean sweep. UC Irvine had entered the match with an impressive 16-2 record, but the Bulldogs clearly demonstrated to be the better team in the shutout. Junior Jacqueline Haskett clinched the match at the No. 6 spot with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Ali Borowicz.
"We definitely proved to be the tougher team," Haskett said. "We showed how good we are on the court - not just on paper."
Haskett got a rhythm midway through her first set before dominating in the second. She improved to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in dual matches.
"I attacked pretty well today," Haskett said. "I took the ball early to give her less time to play and I really finished off my points, as well."
Fresno State got things started by winning all three doubles matches. Sophomore Danon Beatty and freshman Vanessa Heroux beat Borowicz and Jayme Hu 8-1 at the No. 3 spot. Freshmen Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova followed with a convincing 8-2 victory at the No. 2 position, and sophomores Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe rallied to beat Inna Agababian and Clare Fermin 8-6 at the No. 1 spot.
Beatty was the first to finish in singles, beating Heidi Kaloi in straight sets in 41 minutes. Beatty has won three straight, improving to 19-9 overall and 10-4 in dual matches.
Kucerkova was brilliant once again at No. 2 singles, breezing past Agababian 6-2, 6-2 for her 23rd overall victory of the year.
After Haskett clinched the match, Gloria was on top of her game as usual at the No. 1 spot, beating Becky Bernhard 6-1, 6-2. Gloria has won 11 consecutive matches, improving to 27-4 overall and 13-1 in dual matches.
Petukhova was solid at the No. 3 spot, beating Fermin 6-2, 6-0, and Rowe topped Jessica Broadfoot 6-2, 4-6, (10-6) to complete the match.
"We played solid against another quality opponent," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "We're playing like a top-10 team right now."
Fresno State improved to 12-3, while UC Irvine fell to 16-3. The Bulldogs are back in action on Sunday at noon when they host Sacramento State in the Wathen Tennis Center.
