Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Utah State

Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team dominated Utah State in a three-game series this weekend, including a sweep of two games Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Diamond. Fresno State only allowed two runs in three games, outscoring the Aggies 25-2. The Bulldogs won 8-0 in Game 1 Saturday and finished the day off with a 7-2 victory.
The Bulldogs blanked the Aggies 8-0 in the first two games, before Utah State scored its first run of the series in the fourth inning late Saturday afternoon. With the win the Bulldogs improve to 29-12 overall and 5-1 in WAC games. The Aggies drop to 9-20 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
Offensively, Haley Perkins led the Bulldogs, going 3 for 3 with three runs scored. Jenna Cervantez and Merryann Barr each went 2 for 4 and Barr added two RBI.
Barr also picked up the victory for the Bulldogs, improving to 8-5 on the season.
The Bulldogs once again scored first in the second game of the doubleheader. Haley Perkins led the inning off by getting hit and later scored on an RBI double by Merryann Barr.
In the third inning, Perkins once again was involved in another run. Perkins reached on an infield single and came into score on a passed ball, giving Fresno State a 2-0 lead.
Fresno State opened the game up in the fifth inning, scoring five runs on five hits. Kristin Sylvester had an RBI single, Merryann Barr had an RBI single and Robin Mackin added an RBI single in the inning.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Bulldogs beat the Aggies 8-0 for the second straight game. Both games ended in five innings.
Fresno State scored two runs in the second inning, broke out for five runs in the fourth inning and added one in the fifth before the game was called.
Offensively, Haley Perkins did a great job setting the tone at the top of the order. Perkins went 3 for 3 with one RBI and one run scored. Kristin Sylvester went 2 for 4 with three RBI and three runs scored and Nichole Willis was 1 for 1 with two RBI and one run scored.
Robin Mackin earned her second win of the series, pitching five scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out six batters. Mackin also went 1 for 2 at the plate with one run scored.
Michelle Palazuelos went 2 for 2 with one run scored for the Bulldogs and Kori Sherman had one RBI and scored one run in the first game.
Fresno State returns to action Tuesday afternoon when it faces Pacific in a doubleheader in Stockton, beginning at 1 p.m. After Tuesday's makeup doubleheader, the Bulldogs will travel to Saint Mary's to play the Gaels in a doubleheader on Wednesday at 12 p.m.
