FRESNO, Calif. - Junior Laura Luethke is in first place at the WAC Championship in Las Cruces, New Mexico after round one. Luethke leads the tournament after being the only player in the field to shoot under par after recording four birdies to finish with a two under 70. Nevada's Kelly Burke and Boise State's Lindsey Huebert are both tied for second with 73.
"Laura has really been playing well this last month," said head coach Angie Cates. "She is hitting the ball better than I have seen her hit it in awhile. Her short game is very solid; she played a very consistent round of golf today in some tough conditions. She is mentally strong right now and really focused."
Fresno State (305/+17) is in second place, six strokes behind Hawaii (299). Boise State and Nevada are tied for third with scores of 306. New Mexico State (307) is in fifth followed by Idaho (309) and San Jose State (310).
Taylor Siebert is tied for sixth place after making an eagle on the fourth hole to finish the first round with a three over 75. Brittany Cooley and Jennifer Shipley both tied for 28th place with a score of 80. Tiffany Veerkamp is in 35th place with an 83.
"We put ourselves in a good position to win the tournament and that's our goal this week," Cates said. "We are on the bubble for regionals, we are on the outside looking in. We have nothing to lose, so we are going to play without any fear and go out and try to win it."
The `Dogs will compete in the second round at the New Mexico State Golf Course in Las Cruces, NM Tuesday. For live scoring and results go to golfstat.com.
