Softball Rolls Past La. Tech in Two Games

Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team looked outstanding on Saturday, sweeping Louisiana Tech in two games and not allowing a run at Bulldog Diamond. The Bulldogs beat Louisiana Tech 4-0 in the first game and finished the day off with an 8-0 victory in five innings in Game 2.
Fresno State swept the three-game WAC series from La. Tech and improved to 39-16 overall and 12-3 in conference play. Louisiana Tech fell to 20-33 and 3-12 in WAC games.
Merryann Barr pitched five shut out innings in the second game to pick up her 10th victory of the season and Robin Mackin pitched seven shut out innings in the first game to improve to 29-9.
In the second game, Fresno State jumped on the board quick, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Jenna Cervantez started the first inning rally with a triple to right field. Cervantez scored on an error by Louisiana Tech's shortstop Kylie Bassett on Kristin Sylvester's ground ball. Sylvester then scored on another Bassett error on a Merryann Barr ground ball, giving the Bulldogs their two runs.
Fresno State broke open the game in the third inning, scoring four runs on four hits, including one home run. Haley Perkins led the inning off with a single, followed by a Cervantez double. Merryann Barr then drove home both runners with a single up the middle and the next batter Nichole Willis homered deep to left field.
The Bulldogs added two more runs in the fourth inning, giving them an 8-0 lead. With two outs, Cervantez began the rally with her third hit of the game, a single up the middle. Sylvester followed with a triple to right centerfield, scoring Cervantez and Barr drove home Sylvester for her third RBI of the game.
Offensively, Jenna Cervantez went 3 for 3 with three runs scored, Merryann Barr went 2 for 3 with three RBI and Nichole Willis went 1 for 3 with two RBI.
In the first game, the Bulldogs scored once in the third inning, taking a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth before breaking open the game with three runs. Fresno State went on to win 4-0, behind a complete game shut out by Robin Mackin.
Mackin pitched seven innings, allowed seven hits and struck out six batters, improving to 29-9 on the season.
Offensively, Ashley White went 2 for 3 with one RBI and Robin Mackin went 1 for 3 with two RBI. Mackin, Nichole Willis and Lisamarie Coronado each had doubles for the Bulldogs. Willis' double was her 13th of the season.
The Bulldogs managed seven hits on offense and played outstanding defense behind Mackin.
Fresno State returns to action Friday, May 4 when it hosts San Jose State in its final regular season homestand at Bulldog Diamond. The Bulldogs will play a single game on Friday night at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday will be the final regular season home game for three Fresno State seniors, Shannon Garvin, Jasmine Robles and Nichole Willis.
