Stockton, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team rallied for an eight-inning victory in Game 1 on Tuesday afternoon, but couldn't put together a rally in the seventh inning, falling in Game 2 against Pacific in a doubleheader at Bill Simoni Field in Stockton.
The Bulldogs won the first game 9-7 in eight innings, using a Jenna Cervantez two-run home run in the eighth to propel them to the victory. In the second game, Fresno State trailed by two runs, scored one in the sixth, but couldn't plate any in the seventh as it lost 5-4.
After both games Tuesday, the Bulldogs are now 30-12 on the season. Pacific moved to 25-13 overall as both teams were playing the doubleheader Tuesday instead of its original date in February due to rain.
In the second game, the Bulldogs jumped on the board first with two runs in the first inning. Fresno State's Haley Perkins singled, Kristin Sylvester singled and Lisamarie Coronado singled up the middle scoring Perkins and Sylvester.
After Pacific came back to take a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning, Perkins hit a solo home run to right field to tie the game. But the Tigers bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.
Fresno State answered with one run in the sixth inning when Shannon Garvin doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a Michelle Palazuelos ground out to cut the lead to 5-4.
In the opening game, the Bulldogs pulled out a tough 9-7 thriller in eight innings.
Fresno State took an early lead, scoring five runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth inning, leading 7-0. When it looked like the Bulldogs had the game in hand going into the bottom of the fifth inning, Pacific rallied for five runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-6.
The Tigers added one more in the seventh, scoring on a close sacrifice fly and Robin Mackin got out of the inning by stranding a Pacific runner on third base.
Going into the top of the eighth, Fresno State saw its 7-0 lead evaporate, but the Bulldogs bounced back with a huge two-run home run by Jenna Cervantez over the right field fence to take a 9-7 lead. Mackin shut down the Tigers in the bottom of the eighth for the victory.
Mackin picked up her 22nd victory, but it didn't come easy. Mackin threw 178 pitches in the victory, striking out four batters and giving up six earned runs.
Cervantez finished the game 2 for 5 with two RBI and two runs scored, Nichole Willis went 2 for 4 with three RBI, including a two-run home run and Shannon Garvin was 2 for 4 with two RBI.
