Bulldogs in Second After Round One at WAC Championship

FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Grant Doverspike shot a low round of 66 to take first place after round one at the WAC Championship in Reno, Nev. Doverspike finished the round with a birdie on 17 and an eagle on the 18th hole to move into the top position. Doverspike posted six birdies and an eagle on the day to give him his low round.
"He [Doverspike] missed a four inch putt on 16 and it lipped out," said head coach Mike Watney. "He was really upset about that, but then finished with a birdie and an eagle. He had a fantastic round today."
Fresno State (281) finished the day seven under in second place just three strokes behind Nevada (278). Hawaii (283) is in third in front of Boise State (285). New Mexico State (289) is in fifth followed by Utah State (291), Louisiana State (295), Idaho (296) and San Jose State (301).
"We teed off about two hours later than Nevada, so we got more wind then they did today." said Watney. "We feel fortunate to be only three strokes back. We are OK for tomorrow."
Sophomore Matt Ryan finished the round in ninth place with a two -under 70. Brad Wyatt is one stroke behind Ryan to tie for 10th today. Gunnar Avinelis tied for 26th with a 74 and Matt Shaw tied for 31st with a 76.
Tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday for round two at the WAC Championship. Fresno State will begin teeing-off at 9:00 a.m. at the Hidden Valley Country Club. For live scoring go to golfstat.com
