FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State (281-285 - 566) men's golf team is in third place with the help of freshman Grant Doverspike at the WAC Championship in Reno, Nev. Doverspike carded six more birdies today to finish the second round with a 67 at the Hidden Valley Country Club. Combined with his first round of 66, Doverspike has stayed in first place at 11- under. Going into the third round Doverspike is two strokes ahead of Utah State's Devin Daniels.
Doverspike has had two great rounds of golf, after losing all his golf clubs prior to the tournament. Thursday morning he found out his clubs had been stolen and with not enough time to get a new set, scrambled to borrow clubs from his teammates.
"He is playing some phenomenal golf," said head coach Mike Watney. "That is almost unheard of after what happened to him. He is actually hitting further with Pryors driver than he did his own."
Nevada (278-276) increased its lead today with a second round 276 to get a 10-stroke lead over Boise State (285-279). Fresno State trails behind Boise State by two strokes. Hawaii is in fourth followed by Louisiana Tech to round out the top five.
"We had some good golf going but we finished poorly," said Watney. "The wind picked up on the last six holes. The weather is supposed to be bad for tomorrow, which is good for us to pick up strokes. Out intention is to make a charge tomorrow."
Matt Ryan (70-74) and Brad Wyatt (71-73) finished the second round at even par to tie for 18th place. Gunnar Avinelis is tied for 25th place after improving on his first round of 74 by shooting an even 72 today. Matt Shaw (76-73 - 149) is tied for 34th place going into the third round.
The Bulldogs conclude the WAC Championship with the third and final round on Wednesday. For live scoring go to golfstat.com
