Fresno, Calif. - Day 1 Leaderboard
Sophomore Jennifer Shipley continued her season on Thursday, participating in the NCAA Western Regional in St. George, Utah. Playing on the Estrada at Snow Canyon Country Club, Shipley shot a 5-over-par 76 on the way to a tie for 37th place, 8 shots off the lead.
108 women played the course on day one, with the top eight teams and two individuals at the end of the tournament earning entrance into the 2007 NCAA Championships. Shipley was one of just three individuals to qualify for the Western Regional, joining Kay Hoey of Long Beach State and Lehua Wise of New Mexico State.
Opening the day on the 10th hole, Shipley began with a tough start, bogeying the first hole, but battled back with birdies on the 153-yard 12th and 309-yard 15th holes to move to one-under on the day. The stay in the red was brief, however, as she bogeyed the next two holes to move back over par, and she finished the back nine with a +1 score.
On the front nine, Shipley moved through the first four holes with just a single bogey, but three more birdies from holes 5 through 7 pushed her score up to +5, where she stayed after making par on the final two holes of the day.
Thursday's high scorer was Pernilla Lindberg of Oklahoma State, who shot -3 to take the day. However, only five of the players finished the day under par, and only eight take a score of even or better into the second day.
Play continues tomorrow, with another 18 holes which will be followed by the third and final round on Saturday. Shipley is the Bulldogs' lone representative at the event.
