Doverspike Clinches Conference Title
5/2/2007 12:00:00 AM | Men's Golf
"Grant was in the last group playing in the harshest weather conditions for a long time but he still played solid golf," Watney said.
The clubs seemed to not hurt his golf game as he came out on top at the WAC Championships. Doverspike shot 66 in the first round and a 67 in the second round to hold the top spot throughout the tournament.
"It feels pretty good," Doverspike said. "I hit the ball really good the first two days and my putting was really good today to get the win."
With the wind picking up today, Doverspike carded a third round 75 to finish eight-under with 208. Doverspike finished one stroke ahead of Utah State's Devin Daniels for his first collegiate victory.
"Coach kept me filled in so I knew I was a shot ahead with three holes left to play," Doverspike said. "I got a little nervous on the second shot on the 16th hole but once I made that I was confident ii could par the last two."
Fresno State (281-285-303 - 869) wraps up the 2006-07 finish with a fourth place finish today with five over par. With the wind as a huge factor Nevada (860/-4) stuck it out to win the conference title just one stroke over Hawaii (861). Boise State (866) took third place and New Mexico State tied for fifth with San Jose State with 873.
"The weather got worse as the day went on, so it was easier for the first teams that went out," Watney said. "The wind cranked up to about 40 mph in the opposite direction which made some easy become much more difficult. I give Nevada a lot of credit today, in very tough conditions they beat Hawaii who finished an hour before."
Matt Ryan (70-74-73 -217) tied for 12th place and Gunnar Avinelis (74-72-78 -224) tied for 30th. Matt Shaw tied for 34th and Brad Wyatt tied for 34th place with 226.
Matt Ryan and Grant Doverspike both received First-Team All-WAC honors due to their performance this season.
