Seven Bulldogs Earn Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State had seven Bulldogs from five different sports earn 2007 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards announced earlier this week. Patty Torres, Paloma Dominguez, Zinzi Evans, Rochelle Jagdeo, James Tchana, Moses Harris and Chantella Perera were each honored.
Diverse: Issues In Higher Education established the Sports Scholars Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination.
Patty Torres was named to the First Team in track, along with Second Team members Paloma Dominguez and Zinzi Evans. Torres, a junior, carries a 3.79 overall grade point average. Dominguez, a sophomore, had a 3.65 overall GPA and Evans, a senior, holds a 3.6 cumulative GPA.
Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, every college and university in the country is able participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must exhibit academic excellence and community activism.
Senior Rochelle Jagdeo was named to the Second Team in soccer and sophomore James Tchana was named to the Second Team in men's basketball. Tchana holds a 3.48 cumulative GPA. Sophomore Moses Harris was named to the Second Team in football and is the Fresno State SAAC President.
Senior Chantella Perera was named to the Third Team in women's basketball. Perera finished her Fresno State career with a 3.62 grade point average.
To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2; and are active on their campuses or in their communities. Diverse honors Arthur Ashe Jr. by recognizing all of the 2007 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars.
