FRESNO, Calif. - The men and women's Fresno State golf team finished today at the 2007 Giustina Memorial Classic at the Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore. Both teams competed separately against the nine other teams and also had a combined score. The Bulldogs combined score is 923-851 - 1774 to put them in fourth place among the nine other schools after two rounds.
The men's golf team (286-280-285 - 851) finished in second place after shooting the best final round today with a 285 to move up on the leaderboard. Three of the Bulldogs placed in the top-ten today to leave them nine strokes behind the leader and host Oregon State (843). Portland and Oregon tied for third
Matt Ryan finished strong with a third round of 70 to tie for fifth place. He led the men's line-up with 71-69-70 - 210 shooting six-under par. Brad Wyatt (71-70-71 -212) and Todd Angel (72-71-69 - 212) also placed in the top-ten tying for eighth place with four-under par. Grant Doverspike (76-70-75 - 221) tied for 29th and true freshman Michael Gideon (72-78-76 - 226) tied for 41st.
"The guys played very solid today," Watney said. "We only counted one round over par for our first tournament. It's a new year and everybody's got a better attitude. We have more talent and I am looking forward to this season."
The women's team tied with UC Irvine for seventh place. The Bulldogs shot 299-318-306 - 923 to finish a stroke behind Boise State. Washington State finished first with 886 beating out the host team Oregon State (900). Oregon took third (903) followed by UC Riverside (918), and Idaho (920).
Laura Luethke led the `Dogs tied for seventh place finishing eight-over. Taylor Siebert and Pia Escandon finished at 14-over and were tied for 20th. Hali Coppin finished 34th (23-over) while Tiffany Derksen was tied for 39th (31-over).
