FRESNO, Calif. - Junior Roxanne Sellick opened the 2007 season with a solid performance as the Fresno State women's cross country team took sixth out of 12 teams in the UC Irvine Invitational, Saturday in Irvine, Calif. The men's team was led by freshman Erick Garcia and the Bulldogs finished ninth out of 20 teams.
"Overall both teams ran really well," said head coach Joe Gonzales. "Roxanne said she ran comfortably and she and Marissa pushed each other throughout the race. On the men's side, both Erick and Frank Sanders came in under the 26-minute mark, so I thought they looked good today."
Sellick finished ninth overall with a time of 18:27. Sophomore Marissa McPhail followed, placing 15th with a time of 18:43. Senior Meredith Hawkins came in 26th, while junior Briana Cleary finished 36th.
Garcia, running in his first collegiate cross country meet, took 17th with a time of 25:09. Sophomore Frank Sanders took 24th with a time of 25:38, while fellow sophomore Brandon Geis came in at 56th with a time of 26:28. It was Geis' first mark under the 27-minute mark, a career-best.
UC Irvine won the women's 5K race, while Cal Poly took the men's 8K race.
The Bulldogs are back in action next week when they head to the Sacramento State Invitational on Sept. 15.
