FRESNO, Calif.- - The Fresno State women's basketball upped its win streak to eight on Tuesday when they beat San Jose State 81-63 at the Save Mart Center. The win streak is the second longest in school history and the Bulldogs are now one win away from tying the school record of nine. Fresno State is 10-8 overall and in first place in the WAC at 5-0.
"We didn't play our best tonight but you have to credit San Jose for that," Fresno State coach Adrian Wiggins said. "I thought they did play well. We played good enough in the areas that really mattered. We shared the ball and we rebounded really well. I felt like we didn't learn as the game went on but when it came down to it we took good shots in the end and we were able to create some transition buckets.
Fresno State had four players in double figures led by Tierre Wilson's 22 points. Wilson has scored in double figures in 29 straight games and she is eight points away from breaking into the top 10 for career point leaders at Fresno State.
Hayley Munro tied a career high of 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Erica Henry had 14 points and eight rebounds. Jaleesa Ross chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds. The victory also gave Wiggins his 99th career victory as a head coach, 59 of the wins have come at Fresno State.
The Dogs out rebounded San Jose State 45-27 and outshot the Spartans 47 percent to 41 percent.
It took the Bulldogs a while to pull away from a feisty San Jose State team. With 8:19 left in the game the score was tied at 56. Over the final eight minutes Fresno State closed out the game on a 25-7 run to win by 18. Munro started the run with a jumper and Wilson followed with a 3-pointer and Henry then had a lay up to put the Dogs on top 63-57.
"If you cannot play well and win by 18 that is pretty encouraging," Wiggins said
Fresno State shot 50 percent from the field in the second half while San Jose State shot 34.
Fresno State led 43-33 at halftime thanks to 12 points from Wilson and 11 from Munro.
