FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State football and management students hosted a food drive at the Oct. 11 homecoming football and volleyball games. Fresno State fans helped raise food and monetary donations for the Community Food Bank. The Community Food Bank has been fighting Valley hunger since 1992.
"It is inspiring to see first-hand the generosity of Bulldog fans and our campus community," said Julie Olson-Buchanan, Department Chair of Management, Craig School of Business. "The donors, organizers, and volunteers all stepped up to help address the increased need for food in the Valley."
Throughout homecoming week there were collection points set around campus and at both the homecoming volleyball and football games, Red Wave fans donated 1, 559 pounds of food. In addition, during the week Fresno State fans donated $3,929.22, which allows the Community Food Bank to purchase 165, 440 pounds of food.
Overall, the final result is a grand total of 166, 999 pounds of food.
"We are thrilled with the results of the food drive at Fresno State," Community Food Bank CEO, Dana Wilkie said. "Because of the generous response from the community, we will be able to provide nutritious food to hundreds of thousands of hungry children and their families this holiday season."
The Community Food Bank, the Fresno State football team, Fresno State Department of Management and the Sierra-Pacific Orthopedic Center together volunteered their time to make this year's food drive possible.
"Community Food Bank is grateful to Fresno State, in particular the staff and faculty in the athletic department and Craig School of Business, as well as the student-athletes for their tireless efforts to help us address the epidemic of hunger in the Central Valley, said Wilkie."
Since 1992 the Community Food Bank has been feeding the hungry in the Central Valley. Today, they service more than 170 agencies and more than 46,000 individuals on any given week.
