`Dogs Have a Strong Final Round

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's golf team (289-291-281-861/-3) finished the final round of the Sycuan Collegiate Invitational in a tie for eighth place after shooting a combined three-under 861. The Bulldogs, which shot a 291 in the second round, came back to card 281 in the third at Willow Glen Golf Course at the Sycuan Resort.
Leading the way for the Dogs after three rounds was Bryan Hogan (73-74-65-212/-4). The sophomore notched 65 in the final round to finish in the Top-20 by tying for 19th place.
"[Bryan] Hogan had an awesome third round," Mike Watney said. "He switched putters and putted a lot better today."
Dustin Garza of Wichita State (-16), finished in first after recording the one of the best scores in the history of Willow Glen with his 11-under 61 in the second round.
Todd Angel carded a three-round score of 215 to finish in a tie for 32nd at one-under. Brian Sunker competed as an individual and posted a two day total 216 to sit in a tie for 35th place.
Junior Grant Doverspike (74-71-72-217/+1) had a pretty solid third round shooting even par and tying for 46th. Matt Ryan tied for 55th shooting two-over for the tournament. Michal Gideon fired a four-over 220, which was good for a tie for 67th.
"I'm glad we shot a better final round," Watney said. "Hopefully we can carry this momentum into our next tournament in Stockton."
"It's about being tough the whole game, we know we can hang with the great teams but we just have to be more consistent," Watney said.
Colorado State (837) took home the team title shooting 27-under par. UC Santa Barbara (836) was one stroke behind them shooting 26-under. Finishing in third was San Diego; they finished the tournament with a total of 839, and were two strokes out of first.
