FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State equestrian team spent an hour yesterday morning reading to the children of the Children's Hospital Central California.
This is the team's fifth year participating in a community service project at the hospital, but it was their first opportunity to be involved in Read for the Record, an event that welcomes volunteers to read to the kids at Children's Hospital.
All Fresno State student-athletes are expected to be involved with as many community service projects as possible, and each year the department honors the top team that contributes their time in the most events. This gives all student-athletes an incentive to do their part, but the equestrian team doesn't seem to need it. The girls go above and beyond every year for the community and are rewarded with a long-lasting appreciation for the world around them.
"It's always a pleasure for our young ladies to go to Children's Hospital and interact with children," said head coach Becky Malmo. "To see smiles on their faces warms our hearts and in many ways, it's a more life changing time for our student athletes than for the children. We are thankful to Children's Hospital for letting us once again spend time at their facility."
Serena Smith, the Communications assistant at Children's Hospital, is looking forward to having the ladies join them in the future.
