FRESNO, Calif. - Erick Garcia headlined the WAC cross country championships for Fresno State, finishing second for the Bulldog's best individual performance in more than a decade.
Garcia's silver medal performance drove the Bulldogs to third place, the men's top finish since the 2000 season when Fresno State took third in the WAC behind SMU and UTEP. The women's team took seventh at the league meet.
Heading into the conference meet, Garcia and Utah State's Jason Holt and Ben Kessen were the leading contenders for the WAC title. The Fresno State sophomore clocked in at 25:37.10, just 2.3 seconds behind Holt, a junior, and seven seconds ahead of Kessen, a senior. He also earned First Team All-WAC honors for his second-place finish.
Frank Sanders, the Bulldog's solid No. 2 runner, timed in at 26:20.10, to take eighth place and earn Second Team All-WAC honors for the second year. Freshman Eric Battles also earned Second Team All-WAC honors with his 26:20.10 time for 12th place. Elijah Carillo crossed in 19th with a time of 27:06.30. Brandon Gies rounded out the Bulldog scorers, finishing in 24th place at 27:19.60.
Jennifer Hernandez took charge for the women, completing the 5K in 18:54.60 for eighth place and Second Team All-WAC honors. Marissa McPhail ran a 19:08.70 in the race to finish in 17th. Briana Cleary clocked in at 20:14.10 for 40th and Laurie Loeffler's 22:33.90 was good for 53rd.
