Dallas, Tx., - The Fresno State women's basketball team improved its record to 4-1 on Saturday after beating Sam Houston State 76-63 in final day of the Hoops For The Cure Tournament at SMU. After trailing for much of the first half, the Bulldogs outscored Sam Houston State 46-29 in the second half to earn the victory.
"It is tough to play on the road," Fresno State coach Adrian Wiggins said. "In the second half we continued to get better offensively which resulted in made baskets that got us the lead and confidence."
Marnique Arnold scored a career-high 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. It is the second straight game Arnold has had 10 rebounds or more as she had 12 on Friday against Charlotte.
"She competed and battled hard on the boards," Wiggins said of Arnold's effort. "She was great off the dribble and on the perimeter."
Bailey Amundsen had 13 points and eight rebounds while Jaleesa Ross had 11, LaShay Fears 10 and Joh-Teena Filipe 10.
Fresno State out rebounded Sam Houston State 50-29 and shot 42 percent from the field. The `Dogs fell behind 22-14 with eight minutes left until halftime and trailed by as many as 14 at 28-14 three minutes later.
The Bulldogs then climbed within six at 30-24 with 2:05 left until the break following four points by Taja Edwards, a 3-pointer by Ross and a layup by Fears.
Fresno State trailed 34-30 at halftime following a three-point play by Hayley Munro with two seconds left.
The Bulldogs took the lead for good for good at 46-45 on a layup by Fears six minutes into the final period. The lead quickly ballooned to 13 at 58-45 after a 3-pointer by Amundsen with 10:25 remaining. Over the final 10 minutes of the game Fresno State held five different leads of 13 points.
