'Dogs Tie for Third in Pacific Invite

Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno State men's golf team finished the Pacific Invitational on Wednesday in a tie for third place after shooting 859 (+7).
With the finish, the Bulldogs have had their best of the fall season. UC Davis, ranked 15th, placed second after carding a 4-under 280 final round and a total score of 4-over par 856. Rice tied for third place after final round scores of 9-over par 293 and 4-over par 288.
"We played ok," said head coach Mike Watney. "We are getting better every tournament and I can't wait to see what the spring has in store for us. Grant (Doverspike) played great; Bryan (Hogan) also threw in a pretty good round of 71 today."
Mike Van Sickle of Marquette claimed the individual title with a three-round score of 4-under par 209. Grant Doverspike, Robert Streb of Kansas State, Michael Buttacavoli of Rice, and Casey Piper of Northridge all were a part of a four-way tie for second place shooting a tournament total of 210.
Doverspike birdied the final three holes to get nipped by one stroke and place in a tie for second. This is his best finish of the fall season along with one other Top 10 performance. He also finished in second place during this same tournament last season.
Two other bulldogs finished in the Top 20 of the tournament. Senior Matt Ryan (70-27-75-217/+4) and Sophomore Bryan Hogan (70-76-71-217/+4) finished the day tied for 18th. Junior Todd Angel was one stroke behind his teammates shooting 73-72-72-218/+5). Sophomore Michael Gideon finished in 60th place after shooting a total of 232.
The Bulldogs will resume play on February 4, 2009, at the Hilo-Hawaii Invitational in Hilo, Hawaii.
