STANFORD, Calif.- - Marnique Arnold scored a career high 21 points and grabbed six rebounds but the Fresno State women's basketball team still fell short against No. 3 Stanford, losing 100-62 on Saturday afternoon at Maples Pavilion. Stanford upped its record to 7-1 while Fresno State fell to 6-3.
"We ran into a very talented Stanford team tonight," Fresno State coach Adrian Wiggins said. "They have some really good players who play hard. We felt like if we could eliminate some of their transition game that it would help stop some of their easy buckets. That is hard to do. They did a good job of controlling the rebounds after our missed shots. That led to some momentum early."
The only other Bulldog in double figures was Hayley Munro with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Fresno State was held to 32 percent shooting from the field while the Cardinal shot 54 percent and out rebounded the Bulldogs 50-30.
The Bulldogs never led in the game but they did play hard the entire contest. Stanford built a 46-26 lead with two minutes left in the first half but the Bulldogs closed the period on a 9-2 run to cut their deficit to 48-35 at halftime.
"For us the game was closer than what the score looked liked," Wiggins said. "It was closer except for the fact that they did such a great job of hitting important baskets. It leads to spurts. They are very talented. It was a big challenge for us and there is a lot of room to get better."
Stanford jumped out to a 58-37 lead to open the second half in the first two minutes, but the Bulldogs quickly rallied to come within 16 at 58-42 with 16:31 to play following a 3-pointer by Arnold. Fresno State got within 14 at 63-49 two minutes later after a layup by Joh-Teena Filipe.
The Bulldogs then managed only three points over the next eight minutes and soon trailed 86-52 with six minutes to play.
"We realize they are a top three team in the country," Wiggins said. "We would like to become that one day. While we are getting better we are not there yet. It is very fun to be a part of a game like this."
