No. 12 Bulldogs Give No. 8 UCLA Tough Fight

FRESNO, Calif. - Juniors Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe, the nation's No. 1 doubles tandem, stayed undefeated on Friday after beating UCLA's Lind and Zalameda 8-3 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Fresno State lost the doubles point, however, and won only two singles matches while falling to the eighth-ranked Bruins 5-2. But the Bulldogs pushed the Bruins around at several positions in the singles lineup and gave UCLA all it could handle.
Gloria, who had lost to UCLA's top singles player Riza Zalameda (No. 25) in two straight seasons, avenged her defeats with a straight-set victory at the No. 1 spot. Gloria improved to 10-4 overall and 2-1 in dual matches.
"I'm glad Melanie got a win over Zalameda on her home court," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "She really played well and Anastasia also got a solid win over a good opponent."
Gloria and Rowe won their eighth-straight as a duo, improving to 17-3 overall and 5-0 in dual matches.
Sophomore Anastasia Petukhova, ranked No. 11 in the country, breezed past No. 41 Tracy Lin at the No. 2 spot. Petukhova won her third-straight and improved to 18-4 overall and 3-1 in dual matches.
Rowe played Ashley Joelson very tough at the No. 4 spot. Rowe trailed in the second set and pushed Joelson all the way to the tiebreaker before falling 7-4 in the breaker.
The Bulldogs are now 2-2 and will play UC Irvine on Saturday in Bakersfield, Calif. at 2:30 p.m.
