CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - In its first of three-straight games against ranked teams at the Palms Springs Classic in Cathedral City this weekend, the Fresno State softball team shut out No. 21 UNLV 2-0 behind 11 strikeouts from freshman pitcher Morgan Melloh. The Bulldogs improve to 6-1 on the year and Melloh is now 5-0.
Bulldogs would leave the bases loaded in the top of the first and Morgan Melloh struck out the side after giving a leadoff single to Laura Briones in the bottom of the first.
Both teams put few batters on base until the top of the fourth when senior Aja Scheuber walked to leadoff the inning. and Haley Gilleland hit an infield single to the Rebels pitcher to put runners on first and second. In her first start of the season, senior Ashley White hit a double to left field which scored Scheuber from second to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead.
"I knew I was going to move those runners up and I got my pitch and hit it well. It felt good," said White.
Jenna Cervantez reached second on a passed ball in the top of the fifth and third on an error and scored on a sacrifice hit to first by Caitlin Stiglich to give the Bulldogs the 2-0 lead.
White had two hits for the Bulldogs to lead the team.Melloh allowed just one hit in her third shutout of the season.
Fresno State takes on No. 18 Ohio State at 10:30 a.m. and No. 25 Texas at 6 p.m. tomorrow on day two of the Palm Springs Classic. The Ohio State game can be heard live on 790 ESPN the Deuce and the Texas game will be live on 1430 ESPN Radio, immediately following the Dog Zone Show.
"Join the State - Fresno State!" - The Fresno State softball team will play in the Palm Springs Tournament February 21-24. The next home game for the Bulldogs is a doubleheader Monday, February 25 at 6 p.m. against Eastern Michigan. February 25 is Monday Madness and general admission tickets are just $1 on game day.
