FRESNO, Calif. -
The Fresno State women's golf team is on pace to win its second consecutive home tournament, the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational. The Bulldogs shot an 11-over 299 to finish four strokes behind the leader Kansas on Monday. The weather cleared just in time for the 16-team field to compete in the two day tournament. Fresno State is tied with Tulsa for second place.
UC Davis and Hawaii are cutting it close to Fresno State tied for fourth place with 13-over 301 followed by San Francisco (302).
"We are in good position being only four shots out of the lead," said head coach Angie Cates. "I am really happy with the way the team played today, everybody showed up mentally prepared. They knew what they had to do to play well today. Our game plan for tomorrow will be to go out and focus on one shot at a time and not get ahead of ourselves."
Junior Taylor Siebert is leading the Bulldogs tied for sixth place. Siebert posted a 1-over par 73 with four birdies on Monday. Pia Escandon shot a solid 74 to finish tied for 12th place. Senior Laura Luethke shot a 75 to stay in the top-20. Luethke tied for 18th place along with Tiffany Derksen who was playing as an individual for the Bulldogs.
Hali Coppin shot a 5-over 77 to tie for 34th place and keep the Bulldogs at striking distance from the Wildcats. Angelica Villareal shot an 82 to tie for 69th place overall.
Individuals Whitney Yano shot an 80 to tie for 58th place and Chelsea Czinski recorded an 81 to tie for 62nd place. Marissa Patterson shot a 94 to finish 86th.
Lindsey McAtee (69) of Long Beach State is the current leader with a two stroke lead over Meghna Bal of Kansas with a 71.
The Bulldogs will complete the second and final round Tuesday, Feb. 26 at the Copper River Country Club with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. Admission is free to the public and live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
