Scouting New Mexico State
The Aggies enter this week one-half game behind WAC leader Boise State and play at third-place Nevada on Thursday night before coming to Fresno. As one of the WAC's hottest teams, the Aggies have won five straight and seven of their last nine game. In that time, they've scored at least 80 points six times. Six New Mexico State players are scoring in double figures, led by Justin Hawkins at 17 points per game. He also leads the team in rebounding, 7.2 per game.
Against NMSU
New Mexico State leads the series 16-12 after a 77-67 win in Las Cruces, N.M. earlier this season. The Dogs have won four consecutive home games in this series and are 9-3 all-time in Fresno.
Bell Named WAC Player of the Week
Fresno State senior guard Kevin Bell has been named the Western Athletic Conference men's basketball player of the week for Feb. 18-24. This is the first career WAC Player of the Week honor for the senior. Bell, a senior from Los Angeles, Calif. (Fairfax), had two great games as the Bulldogs completed a home sweep, beating Hawai`i 70-65 on Wednesday and Cal Poly 76-70 on Saturday. Against the Warriors, Bell spear-headed a Bulldog comeback with a career-high 27 points and added nine assists. With Fresno State trailing by seven points with less than 3:30 remaining, Bell knocked down a three and hit all four free throws in the final 15 seconds to seal the win for the Bulldogs. Bell made 8-of-18 field goals in the game, 9-of-12 free throws, adding two rebounds and one steal in 38 minutes. Against Cal Poly, Bell scored 19 points and for the second-straight game had nine assists. He again led the Bulldogs in come-from-behind fashion hitting a big three point field goal with 5:10 remaining that gave Fresno State the lead. For the week, Bell averaged 23.0 points, 9.0 assists, made 13-of-29 field goals (.449), 3-of-6 three point field goals (.500), and 17-of-22 free throws (.773). He averaged two boards per game and had a total of two steals.
Ed Ferreira Farewell Tour
After 28 seasons on the Bulldog bench, Fresno State's long-time athletics trainer has announced this will be his final season. Ferreira is retiring from Fresno State in August 2008. He's been a part of the most successful teams in Bulldog history and worked under coaches Boyd Grant, Ron Adams, Gary Colson, Jerry Tarkanian, Ray Lopes and Steve Cleveland. Ferreira may continue teaching at Fresno State and spend time with his wife, Marta, his two daughters, and a granddaughter. Bell Climbs Record Books
Fresno State senior point guard Kevin Bell is working his way up the record books this season in his final year in a Bulldog uniform. Bell moved into second place in Fresno State history for assists. He is 19 assists away from passing Dominick Young for the all-time record. Bell has led the WAC in assists the last two seasons and his assist total has gone up all three years he has been here. He'll need to average 4.8 assists per game to catch Young. In addition to handing out assists, Bell has moved into Fresno State's top 25 in career points. At his current pace of more than 18 points per game, he will finish in top 20 all-time for Bulldog scorers. If Bell leads the WAC in assists again this season, it would mark the 11th time in the last 15 years a Bulldog player has led the league in assists. Others to leads the WAC in assists were: Shantay Legans, Tito Maddox, Demetrius Porter, Chris Herron, Dominick Young and Brian Santiago.
