FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's equestrian squad will head into the 2008 Varsity Equestrian National Championships next month in Waco, Texas battled tested and ready.
After a tough road swing through Big 12 country, in which the Dogs dropped matches to Kansas State on Friday and Oklahoma State on Saturday, head coach Becky Malmo believes this competition will help her team.
The Cowgirls beat the Bulldogs 10-5 at Oklahoma State's student arena.
The highlight of the day was the MVP won by senior Kirsten Sohns, who continues to have a stellar season. Sohns scored an 83 in Equitation on the Flat and beat her opponent by 20 points. However, that would be Fresno State's only win in that event, an event that the Dogs have been strong in all season. Freshman Mallory Hames rode well with a 77, but lost her match.
Another of Fresno State strength this is season is the Fences team, but again the Dogs won just one of four matches. Lisa Wells, who was selected MVP against Kansas State, won her match with a 79, beating her Oklahoma State opponent, Bailey Mahoney, by 24 points. Cambria Kissell ride of 74 was not good enough to beat her opponent, while senior Katie Nenneker rode well for the second straight day scoring a 76, but was two points behind of Ally Blais.
The Dogs picked up a pair of wins in Horsemanship, as junior Rebecca Flood and Asheline Beeson, each won their matches. Flood scored a 70.5 and won by 3.5 points. Beeson had a 67.5 to win by 2.5 points. Despite a turning in the top score by a Bulldog in the event with a 73.5, freshman Adriane Smith lost her match by two points.
Wells, a junior who continues to have an excellent season, took home the MVP award in Equitation over Fences. The Dogs took the fences competition 2-1 with all four riders scoring in the 70s. Katie Nenneker won her match over Kendall Marvin with a score of 75. Cambria Kissell scored a 78 and Jennifer Jory had a 72.
Jill Tebbe picked up Fresno State's only victory in reining. Tebbe had a 70.5 score to beat her Oklahoma State opponent, Rachel Shobe, by two points. Shellie Dalluge had the best score by the Dogs with a 71.5 to tie her opponent Molly Tripton of Oklahoma State.
The Dogs are off until the 2008 Varsity Equestrian National Championships in Waco, Texas, April 16-18.
