FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's golf team clinched its second title of the season on Tuesday at the Elco, Inc. Intercollegiate. Fresno State beat out eight teams at the par 72 Bakersfield Country Club. The Bulldogs shot a record tournament low of 846, beating the previous record by two strokes. The recod-setting win started with low rounds in the first and second round with 275-280 and capped the win with 291 in the third round to finish 18-under par. CSU Bakersfield finished 23-strokes behind the Bulldogs with 869 followed by Pepperdine with 875.
Freshman Michael Gideon led the `Dogs with three rounds in the 60's to clinch the individual title. This marks Gideon's first collegiate win with 69-68-69 - 206 finishing 10-under par. Gideon's second round 68 marks his career low at Fresno State surpassing his previous score of 69 which he also matched this week.
"Michael Gideon showed maturity far beyond his years." Said head coach Mike Watney. "After bogeying the first hole of the day he followed with an eagle on two and birdie on three and he was off running. His first win was in a very strong manner."
"It feels really good to win," said Michael Gideon. "I was really comfortable the whole day, I wanted to win but I wasn't that nervous. After the first bogey, I knew it was only one hole and there was plenty of golf left to play so I wasn't that worried about it."
The Bulldogs filled the top three spots with Grant Doverspike finishing in second place with 70-69-73 - 212 finishing 4-under par. Brad Wyatt also had his best finish of the season with a third place finish with 68-72-73 - 213 leaving him at 3-under par. Todd Angel tied for eighth place after shooting 68-72-80 - 220. Matt Ryan tied for 14th place after posting 78-71-76 - 225. Mark Pryor tied for 11th place playing as an individual for the Bulldogs with scores of 75-73-74 - 222.
"I'm very proud of the guys," Watney said. "There is always a little extra pressure when you're trying to win a golf tournament. It was just a Good day for the `Dogs."
The tournament was scored in two flights, Division I and non-Division I. Both played together and Fresno State and Michael Gideon were the top team and individual overall.
"Join the State - Fresno State!" - The Fresno State men's golf team will head to the Western Intercollegiate March 26-27 in Santa Cruz, Calif. For all your information on Fresno State athletics go to gobulldogs.com.
