Bulldogs Head to Final Round at Western Intercollegiate

FRESNO, Calif. - Todd Angel was the only Bulldog to improve his score from the first round to the second at the tough par 70 Pasatiempo Golf Course on Monday. Fresno State is in 15th place in the team standings after 36 holes of the 62nd annual Western Intercollegiate men's golf tournament.
Michigan State has a 567 total after the first day of play. Saint Mary's is second at 581, 14 shots behind. California is third at 585 in the 16-team field.
The Bulldogs who were tied for ninth after the first round with 298, struggled as the wind picked up in the second round. Fresno State shot 319 in the second round to have a 617 total.
Todd Angel led the `Dogs with 76-75 - 151 to finish 11-over tied for 35th place. Matthew Ryan tied for 45th place with scores of 73-79 - 152. Michael Gideon finished with a two round total of 155 with scores of 75-80. Grant Doverspike in 77th place shot 74-85 - 159 to finish 19-over. Brad Wyatt tied for 85th place with a total of 165, 25-over.
"It was a very tough course," said head coach Mike Watney. "We were having difficulty with it and then the wind picked up and are scores got very high. We just didn't handle it at all today.
Saint Mary's Mike McRae is the individual leader with a five-under par 135. He opened the tournament with a four-under par 66 and was tied for the lead with Missouri's Will Harrold after 18 holes. McRae, who had nine birdies on the day, added an afternoon score of 69 while Harrold faded with a 78 in the afternoon.
Michigan State's Newman is second at 136. None of the other 88 players in the 90-player field is under par. Payne Gniewek of Michigan State is third at one-over par 141.
The 54-hole tournament concludes with 18 holes on March 27. Live scoring can be viewed on www.golfstat.com.
