No. 12/13 `Dogs 2-0 in WAC Play

LOGAN, Utah - Fresno State defeated Utah State 6-1 and 9-1 (5) to complete the sweep on day one of the three-game series to open WAC play for the Bulldogs Friday afternoon in Utah. The No. 12/13 ranked Bulldogs improved to 32-5 on the year, 2-0 in WAC play, while Utah State falls to 6-20 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
Game One
Left fielder Ashley White hit a solo home run to left field, her third of the season, for a 1-0 Bulldog lead in the top of the fourth.
Jenna Cervantez would walk and steal second base. She would score off an error by the Aggies second baseman with two outs that sent Haley Perkins to first.
A bunt single by Gilleland put runners on first and second and Caitlin Stiglich hit a three-run home run to left field for a 5-0 lead. Stiglich now has a team-high seven home runs on the year.
Mikey Price was hit by a pitch and stole second in the bottom of the sixth for Utah State. She would score of a double to right field by Megan McDonald to make it 5-1 Bulldogs.
Perkins led off the top of the seventh with a first pitch double to left center. Gilleland would then hit a bunt single to put runners on the corners with no outs.
An error by the Aggie center fielder would score Perkins from third for a 6-1 Bulldog advantage and the final score.
Freshman Morgan Melloh improved to 21-3 on the year and had a career-high 16 strikeouts.
Gilleland, Stiglich and White each had two hits a piece and Stiglich had three of the four team RBI's.
Game Two
A four-pitch walk to Caitlin Stiglich with two outs set up for a two-run home run to center field by Aja Scheuber for a 2-0 Bulldog lead in the first.
Utah State hit their first home run of the day, a solo shot to right field by Kelley Kaneshiro to cut the Bulldog lead in half, 2-1.
After a Lisamarie Coronado single to shortstop in the top of the second with two outs, she would score from first off a double to right field by Perkins.
Perkins would then steal third and reach home on an error by the catcher for a 4-1 Bulldog lead.
Stacey Ellingsworth would replace Utah State starting pitcher Tylee Landon in the top of the third. Landon went two innings and gave up four runs, three earned runs on six hits and had two strikeouts.
Scheuber hit her second home run of the game, her fifth of the season, a solo shot to center field to lead off the top of the third for a 5-1 lead.
Jenna Cervantez hit her sixth home run of the year, a two run shot to left field for a 7-1 lead with still no outs in the third.
Coronado hit her second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left center to also bring in Cervantez from first after she reached on an error in the top of the fifth inning for a 9-1 lead. Coronado ended the game with three hits, her first three-hit game of the season and second multi-hit game of the year.
It was the first game of the season that the Bulldogs would have four home runs in one game, and the first multi-home run game of the season for any Bulldog and the first of Scheuber's career.
Gilleland picked up her 13th stolen base of the year in the game, to rank her seventh on the single season list.
Freshman pitcher Nicole Angene for Fresno State improved to 5-2 and pitched her first complete game of the season.
The Bulldogs and Aggies will complete the three-game series on Saturday with a single game at 2:00 p.m. pacific time in Logan.
