FRESNO, Calif. -
Sophomore Hali Coppin led the `Dogs at the Peg Barnard Collegiate tying for 10th place. Coppin highlighted the three-over par 74 score with a hole-in-one on the 14th hole and four birdies. Coppin fired the 163 yard shot with a 5-iron to mark her second hole-in-one and her first while at Fresno State. Brittany Cooley is the only other Fresno State women's golfer to shoot a hole-in-one and she made it during a practice round in Colorado.
"Hali started the day playing really great today," said four-year head coach Angie Cates. "Her hole-in-one was an absolutely beautiful shot; it landed three-feet in front of the pin and just rolled in. She also followed it with two birdies, so she had a really strong first nine holes."
With Coppin leading the way, the Bulldogs are in sixth place out of 14 teams. Fresno State shot 23-over par 307 at the par 71 Stanford Golf Club. California is the current leader with 11-over par 295, followed by Washington (297) and Stanford (300).
Laura Luethke is tied for 20th place with a score of 77 on Friday. Pia Escandon and Chelsea Czinski both tied for 33rd place with eight-over par 79. Taylor Siebert shot 81 to tie for 47th place after round one.
"As a team we could have played better," Cates said. "We left a lot of shots out there. Our swing and our short game look solid so we hope to move up on the leaderboard tomorrow."
The 36-hole tournament concludes Saturday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. at the Stanford Golf Club.
