FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 8 Fresno State English squad faced a tough test Friday morning in the second round of the 2008 Varsity Equestrian National Championship, having to start the day against the nation's No. 1 team, Oklahoma State. The Cowgirls upended the Bulldogs 6-2 to continue their push toward a national title.
The Dogs moved into the consolation bracket, where they faced No. 4 South Carolina. The Gamecocks ended Fresno State's season with a 6-2 victory.
The Bulldogs opened the championship on Thursday with a 5-2 win over No. 9 New Mexico State. The VENC national championship event is hosted by Baylor University and held at the Heart O' Texas Arena in Waco, Texas.
The Bulldogs split the four fences matches, with No. 3 Lisa Wells and stalwart Katie Nenneker each earning victories over their Oklahoma State foes. The Bulldogs however did not win a match on the Flat, despite some excellent riding. By and large, the Bulldogs all performed and scored better than during the first round against New Mexico State.
Against South Carolina, Nenneker and Jennifer Jory each won matches in Equitation over Fences, but the Dogs were swept on the Flat.
Fresno State's Lisa Well, the nation's No. 3 rider in Equitation over Fences, will compete for an individual national championship on Friday. Wells will take on No. 2 Kristin Terebisi from South Carolina in her first round match. Only the nation's top four riders advance for individual championships.
Individual Championships Equitation over Fences
1. Nicole Brown, Baylor
2. Kristin Terebesi, South Carolina
3. Lisa Wells, Fresno State
4. Ally Blais, Oklahoma State
"We had some really good rides today and I'm happy with that," head coach Becky Malmo said "Katie Nenneker had a big day today. I was really proud of her. Obviously Oklahoma State and South Carolina are two of the top four teams in the nation so the competition was pretty tough. We are looking forward to seeing Lisa Wells tomorrow. She has performed well for us here this week and I know she will be ready for tomorrow."
