FRESNO, Calif. - The 15th-ranked Fresno State women's tennis team showed no mercy to visiting Cal Poly and Pacific on Saturday in a doubleheader at the Wathen Tennis Center. The 'Dogs beat Cal Poly 6-1, and shut out Pacific 7-0 in the regular season finale. The Bulldogs finish the regular season having won six straight while improving to 17-7 on the year.
"We really finished the season strong and it gives us confidence heading into the WAC Championships," said head coach Simon Thibodeau.
The Bulldogs also celebrated the career of senior Jacqueline Haskett on Saturday against Pacific. It was Haskett's last regular-season home match and the team honored her in between doubles and singles play.
Haskett has won more than 100 matches in singles and doubles combined over the course of her four-year career. She was named a first-team All-WAC performer in doubles during the 2005-06 season when she went 20-6 overall and 19-3 in dual matches.
Haskett has won a Western Athletic Conference title in each season at Fresno State and reached the NCAA Round of 16 on two occasions. Haskett has often found herself at the center of some of Fresno State's most important matches over the past several years. In three WAC tournaments, Haskett has become a specialist for Fresno State, going undefeated with a 5-0 record in singles and a 4-0 mark in doubles.
Haskett won all four of her matches on Saturday, including a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Clara Schumacher of Pacific in what could be her final match at the Wathen Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs, however, hope to host next month's NCAA Regional Championships as they did last year. The 'Dogs are currently ranked 15th and would likely host again if they remain in the top-16.
The rest of the Bulldogs were also convincing winners on Saturday. Juniors Melanie Gloria, Bruna Paes and Tinesta Rowe, and sophomores Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova were all straight-set winners.
Fresno State now travels to Las Cruces, N. M. for the WAC tournament, April 24-26.
