FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's golf team trails Hawaii by eight strokes heading into the second round of the 18th annual WAC Championships. The Bulldogs shot 21-over 309 in the first round to tie no. 38 San Jose State according to Golfstat rankings. The Rainbow Wahine shot a total of 301 in the first round at the 6,125-yard, par-72 Sunnyside Country Club in Fresno, Calif. The defending champion Idaho and New Mexico State are tied for fourth at 312 followed by Nevada (316) and Boise State (324).
Senior Laura Luethke leads the Bulldogs in third place with a one-over par 73 only one stroke out of the lead. Corie Hou of Hawaii and Suteera Chanachai of New Mexico State are tied for first with an even par 72 in the 35-player field.
"Sunnyside is a very challenging golf course and Laura was really consistent," said head coach Angie Cates. "She hit the ball great and had a solid short game, I think she had a lot of fun and was more relaxed than everyone on the team."
Taylor Siebert is in tenth place with a 77 followed by Hali Coppin. Coppin tied for 16th place with a 79 and Pia Escandon finished the round in 22nd place with an 80. Chelsea Czinski rounded out the Bulldog line-up tying for 23rd place with an 81.
"We got off to a rough start this morning," Cates said. "I think a lot of it was due to nerves off the beginning holes. After the turn they got more comfortable and did really good on the back nine. Tomorrow we just have to be more relaxed off the first tee."
The three-day tournament continues on Tuesday with second-round tee times beginning at 8:00 a.m. Admission is free for spectators to watch play.
