FRESNO, Calif. -
The Bulldogs played consistent at the 18th annual WAC Championships to remain in second place. The Bulldogs shot a 301 Tuesday posting the low round of the day. The `Dogs cut Hawaii's lead by one-stroke with scores of 309-301 - 610 to trail by seven strokes at the 6,125 yard- par 72 Sunnyside Country Club. New Mexico State (614) moved up to third while San Jose State (616) fell to fourth place. Idaho (620) is in fifth followed by Boise State (629) and Nevada (630).
"The team was more relaxed today," said head coach Angie Cates. "We had a couple of bad holes on the front nine, but we were able to get it together and we finished really strong. We know what we need to do to make it to postseason. We are sticking to our game-plan on how to play Sunnyside and we just have to try to enjoy every moment."
Senior Laura Luethke leads the `Dogs through two rounds posting three-over par 73-74 - 147. Luethke drained two birdies on the final two holes to tie for second place with two-over par 74. Luethke is two-strokes back from the leader, Hawaii's Corie Hou.
"Laura had a great comeback," Cates said. "She finished strong with two birdies on 17 and 18. She put herself back in contention to win this tournament. Staying confident tomorrow will be key for her."
Taylor Siebert moved up on the leaderboard to tie for seventh place after improving her first round 77 with a 76 on Tuesday. Siebert is nine-over par with 153.
Hali Coppin improved in her second round with a 76. Coppin quadruple bogeyed the first hole and came back to shoot even for the rest of the day with two birdies and two bogeys. Coppin finished tied for 11th place finishing 11-over par 155 along with Pia Escandon who shot 75 Tuesday. Chelsea Czinski tied for 27th place with 16-over par 160. Czinski also improved her second round shooting 81-79 - 160.
The three-day tournament concludes on Wednesday with final-round tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m.
